The potato, we are told, is the best package of nutrition in the world, being rich in calories, minerals, vitamins and protein and virtually free of fat. It has no known allergens and is gluten free. Potatoes supply every vital nutrient except calcium, vitamin A and vitamin D. The crop can be grown across a diverse range of soil types and climatic conditions and has the ability to provide more nutritious food faster on less land than any other food crop, and in almost any habitat.

Belete (CIP-393371.58) በለጠ
• Belete is a widely-cultivated improved variety in the Ethiopian highlands. It matures early and has a high yield (up to 47.2 t/ha). • Resistant to late blight and potato virus X, susceptible to potato leaf roll virus, Potato Virus Y, and bacterial wilt. • Dry matter content: High (25.4-25.55%). • Suitable for stews but also good for processing into chips (crisps) and french fries.
• Burka is widely adaptive: it can grow in areas between 1,500 and 2,800 meters above sea level. • Medium-length maturity and yields 20-25 t/ha. • Highly-preferred due to its high resistance to late blight and most potato virus • Has high dry matter content (25.4-25.55%). • Suitable for stews but can be processed into chips (crisps) and french fries
• Recommended for highlands with altitude between 2,000 and 2,800 meters above sea level. • Adapts well to irrigated production with medium-length maturity and yields of 33-49 t/ha. • Resistance to late blight seems to have broken down in recent seasons. • Medium dry matter content (22-24%). • Good for boiled tubers and stews. • Makes light-colored chips.
• Released for its high iron and zinc content, unlike other former varieties. • Recommended for cultivation in ecologies ranging from 1500 to 2800 meters above sea level. • Medium-length maturity and yields up to 38.4 t/ha. • Moderate resistance to late blight. • Low dry matter content (18-20%). • Consistently high levels of iron (17.29 mg/kg) and zinc (13.32 mg/kg) • Produces moderately dark crisps and light-colored french fries.
One of the most popular and widely grown varieties in Ethiopia. • Wide adaptation, can grow from 1600 to 2800 meters above sea level. • Early-to-medium length maturity and high yields averaging 29.2 t/ha. • Moderate resistance to late blight but susceptible to PLRV. • Medium dry matter content (22.8-24.5%) • Good as a table potato but can make quality chips and french frie
The potato is a member of the Solanaceae family, which includes tomatoes, aubergines and peppers. There are about 150 species in the wild, but only one, Solanum tuberosum, is grown outside the Andes. Within this species, however, there are thousands of different varieties. The International Potato Centre in Peru has preserved almost 5,000 varieties and new varieties are constantly in development.
